SUE INGLETON

actor * writer* director* facilitator

SUE INGLETON: ACTOR, DIRECTOR, PLAYWRIGHT, AUTHOR, FACILITATOR. Member of Actors Equity since 1974.

Sue BEGAN her PROFESSIONAL CAREER in theatre around 1971 as a member of the Australian Performing Group-Collective in Melbourne at the Pram Factory Theatre. Prior to that in earlier days at Melbourne University (B. Architecture) & was awarded the undergrad Murray Sutherland Drama Award. In her final year ‘66, she directed the infamous Architecture Revue. Theatre was then and still is her life's passion, a passion that has extended itself not only into writing, directing & performing but also to teaching and thence to the discovery of shamanic theatre techniques, enhanced by her own training and development which, in time, has led to the training of young actors and non-actors who are searching for their life path.

I co-founded the Women’s Theatre Group, an early initiative of the APG women, which created groundbreaking feminist theatre in the 70's. From there I went to England where I created cabaret shows that toured UK Festivals & European venues. In 1981, 8 months pregnant with my last child I created a world first- Bill Rawlings the pregnant man; there have many imitators since but I was the first. Bill, some 30 years on is still with me in many of my theatrical shows. He encapsulates both the dark side and funny side of the Australian male psyche. My alter ego is Edith Wise, a dominating 88, feisty, funny and uncompromising.

I am the proud and grateful recipient of the Sydney Myer Individual Performing Arts Award, The Gloria’s Award, nomination for the Perrier Award UK, numerous nominations for Best Actor over the years, winner of the R.E. Ross Playwright’s Award and the recipient of many Asialink and Australia Council Grants. Sue has taken her theatre both as performance and teaching to the UK, North America, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Greece, Nth Korea, the Netherlands, Malaysia and all around Australia. She has worked for most major theatre companies, including Belvoir Street, STC, La Boite, MTC. La Mama, The APG, BREC (Bunbury WA), Circa & Downstage, Wellington-NZ.,ICA London, etc. has performed at Adelaide International Festival of Arts, (twice) Montreal Juste Pour Rire, MICF, Festival of Fools- Penzance, and New York International Theatre Fringe Festival. She has written eleven plays and two books. Is a shamanic healer and civil celebrant and runs workshops in these areas.

Sue has dedicated her creative life to fighting for equality for women. She is an Agent of Change- the personal is political and her work has been rewarded and awarded for its innovative, ground -breaking, rule breaking commitment to finding a Truth in our world, a truth which will serve to both heal and to excite audiences at home and abroad. She has never given up on Theatre both as a means to change the world and as a life long passion.
